Drain Cleaning in Charleston, SC
A slow drain is easy to ignore. Water still goes down, just not as fast as it used to. But drains almost never fix themselves, and what starts as an extra few seconds of standing water usually ends as a full blockage, often at the worst possible time.
At Pineapple Plumbing, we clear clogged drains for homeowners across Charleston, Summerville, Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, North Charleston, James Island, Johns Island, and Goose Creek. Just as importantly, we figure out why the drain clogged so it doesn’t happen again. Co-owners Austin Holcomb and Austin Webb have spent a combined 22 years clearing Lowcountry drains, and they’ll tell you the same thing every time: the clog you can see is often a symptom of something happening deeper in the line.
That diagnostic mindset is the difference between a drain that stays clear and one that backs up again in three months.
Why Charleston Drains Clog Differently
Drain problems here aren’t quite like drain problems anywhere else. Four local factors shape almost every drain call we take.
Tree roots hunt for your sewer line. Charleston’s live oaks are one of the best things about living here and one of the worst things for underground pipes. Roots sense the moisture and nutrients inside sewer lines and work their way in through the smallest joint gaps or cracks. Older clay and cast iron lines, common in downtown Charleston, West Ashley, and older parts of James Island, are the most vulnerable. Once roots are inside, they act like a net, catching everything that flows past until the line blocks completely. Even Charleston Water System specifically warns homeowners to watch for root intrusion on their sewer laterals.
Cast iron drain lines are aging out. Homes built through the 1960s commonly have cast iron waste pipes. Cast iron rusts from the inside, and that rust creates a rough, flaking interior surface that grabs grease, paper, and debris. If your older home clogs repeatedly in the same line, corroded cast iron is often the underlying cause, and no amount of snaking permanently fixes a pipe whose interior surface has turned to sandpaper.
Heavy rain overwhelms the system. During hurricane season and major rain events, the ground here saturates fast. Groundwater infiltrates cracked sewer laterals, storm flow surges through older combined systems downtown, and drains that work fine on a dry day suddenly gurgle and back up. If your drains only misbehave during or after heavy rain, the problem is usually in your sewer lateral, not inside your house.
Flat terrain means lazy drainage. The Lowcountry is, well, low. Sewer lines here often run at minimal slope, which means waste moves slower and settles more easily than it would in hillier markets. Grease and sediment that would flush through a steeper line accumulates here. This is one reason Charleston kitchens are especially unforgiving about grease down the drain.
How We Clear Drains — and How We Choose the Method
Different clogs need different tools, and using the wrong one wastes your money or damages your pipes. Here’s how we decide.
Drain snaking (augering) is the right call for localized clogs near the fixture, such as hair in a shower drain, a toilet paper blockage, or a kitchen clog in the trap or branch line. A motorized auger breaks through the blockage and restores flow. It’s fast and affordable, and for most single fixture clogs, it’s all you need.
Hydro jetting uses high pressure water to scour the entire interior wall of the pipe, removing grease layers, scale, sediment, and root fragments that a snake simply pokes a hole through. We recommend jetting for recurring clogs, greasy kitchen lines, and main lines with heavy buildup. One honest caveat competitors rarely mention is that severely corroded cast iron may be too fragile for full pressure jetting. We assess pipe condition first, sometimes with a camera, before choosing pressure levels because clearing your drain shouldn’t come at the cost of cracking your pipe.
Camera inspection answers the question every homeowner with recurring clogs should be asking: what’s actually down there? A waterproof camera fed through the line shows us roots, cracks, bellied sections, joint separations, and buildup in real time. If your drain has clogged more than twice in the same spot, a camera inspection almost always saves money in the long run because it replaces guesswork with a diagnosis.
What we don’t do: Pour chemicals down your line. Caustic drain chemicals generate heat that damages older pipes, sit in bellied line sections eating at the pipe wall, and rarely remove the full blockage anyway. If you’ve been treating a slow drain with store bought chemicals for months, please tell us when we arrive. It changes how we safely handle the line.
The Warning Signs Most Homeowners Miss
Gurgling from a toilet or tub when another fixture drains means air is being pulled through water traps, a classic early sign of a partial main line blockage. Multiple slow drains at once almost always means the problem is in the main line, not the individual fixtures. A sewage odor from drains, or unusually lush green stripes in your yard along the sewer line path, suggests a cracked or leaking lateral. Water backing up in the tub when the washing machine drains is a main line warning that should be addressed within days, not months.
One Charleston specific tip straight from the local utility: check your sewer cleanout cap. It’s the white capped pipe in your yard, usually near the house. If the cap is cracked or missing, yard debris, mulch, and even small animals can enter your sewer line and cause blockages that have nothing to do with what goes down your drains. Replacing a cap costs a few dollars. The clog it prevents can cost hundreds.
When Drain Cleaning Isn't Enough
We’ll always tell you honestly when you’ve crossed from a cleaning problem into a repair problem. Drain cleaning solves blockages inside a structurally sound pipe. It cannot fix a collapsed line, a badly bellied section that recollects waste, a joint that roots reenter every season, or cast iron whose interior has fully corroded. If a camera inspection shows structural damage, we’ll show you the footage, explain your options, including spot repair, lining, or replacement, and give you a straight recommendation without pressure. Sometimes the honest answer is, “Clean it now. Budget for repair next year.” You deserve to know where your line actually stands.
