What to Do Right Now During a Plumbing Emergency
If water is actively leaking or flooding your home, the first priority is to stop the flow if you can do so safely. You don’t need to know what’s causing the problem before taking steps to protect your home, but it’s important not to put yourself at risk trying to reach plumbing or electrical equipment.
Shut Off the Water If You Can Safely Reach the Valve
If the problem involves one fixture, such as a leaking toilet, bathroom sink, or washing machine connection, look for its individual shut-off valve. These are commonly located beneath sinks, behind toilets, or near the connected appliance. Closing the appropriate valve may stop the leak without interrupting water service to the entire house.
If a supply pipe has burst or you cannot isolate the affected fixture, locate your home’s private main water shut-off valve. The location varies by property, but it may be near where the supply enters the building, outside near the front of the house, or in a garage or utility area. Only operate a valve you can reach safely, and don’t force one that’s stuck or damaged.
For properties served by Summerville Commissioners of Public Works (SCPW), utility meter boxes are locked. Homeowners should not force them open or tamper with the meter. If you cannot shut off the water using your private plumbing valves, contact SCPW at (843) 871-0810 for assistance if it is your water provider.
Keep Away From Electrical Hazards and Contaminated Water
If water is reaching outlets, appliances, electrical panels, or wiring, avoid the affected area. Do not touch switches or attempt to disconnect equipment while standing in water. If there is an immediate electrical danger, contact emergency services or your electricity provider for assistance.
If sewage is coming up through a toilet, tub, or floor drain, stop using plumbing fixtures and keep children and pets away from the affected area. Wastewater may contain harmful microorganisms, so avoid walking through it or attempting extensive cleanup without appropriate protective equipment.
Protect Belongings and Document the Damage
Once the immediate danger is controlled, move furniture, rugs, electronics, and other belongings away from the affected area if it is safe to do so. If your property has sustained water damage, photographs of the source and affected materials may help when speaking with your insurance provider. Coverage depends on the circumstances and your individual policy.
If the situation involves a suspected gas leak, leave the building immediately without operating electrical switches or equipment. From a safe location, contact your gas utility or call 911 before arranging plumbing repairs.

Emergency Plumbing Problems We Handle in Summerville
Not every plumbing failure is the same. Some involve a broken water supply connection that needs to be isolated, while others involve blocked drains, damaged sewer lines, or malfunctioning water heaters. Understanding the symptoms helps us determine the urgency and what type of plumbing service may be appropriate.
Burst Pipes and Broken Water Supply Lines
A burst pipe can release a significant amount of water before the damaged section is isolated. You may notice water spraying from a connection, moisture spreading across flooring, or water coming through a ceiling or wall. Pipe failures can result from deterioration, damaged fittings, freezing conditions, or other stresses on the plumbing system.
If a pipe bursts, shut off the affected water supply if possible and avoid the wet area if electrical equipment may be involved. Pineapple Plumbing can assess the damaged section, explain the repair options, and determine whether replacing a fitting or section of pipe is appropriate. When surrounding plumbing is deteriorated, we’ll explain whether additional work should be considered rather than assuming one repair will solve every problem.
For problems involving concealed or difficult-to-locate leaks, learn more about our leak detection and pipe repair services.
Major Water Leaks and Active Flooding
Water collecting beneath a sink is concerning, but a supply connection that suddenly fails or a hidden pipe that begins leaking heavily can create a more urgent situation. You might discover water spreading from a cabinet, dripping through a ceiling, or soaking flooring near an appliance or water heater.
The visible water isn’t always coming from the location where the pipe has failed. Water can travel along framing, through cabinets, and beneath finished surfaces before appearing elsewhere. We investigate the affected plumbing to establish the likely source and determine what repairs are needed. If further access or investigation is necessary, we’ll explain the options before proceeding with approved work.
If the leak is active and you cannot contain it, don’t wait for visible damage to worsen. Shut off the water if safe and call for assistance.
Sewer Backups and Wastewater Entering Your Home
A sewer backup is more than an ordinary clogged drain. When wastewater starts coming up through a bathtub, shower, toilet, or floor drain, a blockage or failure may be preventing the drainage system from carrying waste away from the property.
Stop running water, flushing toilets, or using appliances that drain into the plumbing system. Continuing to send wastewater toward the blockage can increase the amount backing up into your home. Avoid contact with contaminated water, and don’t attempt to open a pressurized or overflowing sewer cleanout yourself.
A backup may involve heavy buildup, tree roots, a damaged private sewer line, or an issue with the public wastewater system. The appropriate response depends on where the problem occurs. We can discuss the symptoms and determine whether drain clearing, further diagnosis, or structural sewer repairs may be necessary.
For recurring sewer problems, visit our sewer line repair and replacement page.
Overflowing Toilets and Blocked Household Drains
An overflowing toilet can quickly become a serious problem if water continues entering the bowl or wastewater has nowhere to go. If the toilet is filling and won’t stop, close its individual shut-off valve if accessible. Avoid flushing again, even if you believe the blockage might clear on another attempt.
If one toilet is affected, the obstruction or malfunction may be limited to that fixture. When several toilets, sinks, or showers are backing up together, the problem could be farther down the drainage system. We’ll help determine whether the issue involves a toilet component, local drain obstruction, shared drain, or main sewer line.
A toilet that runs continuously without overflowing may be suitable for a routine repair appointment, but active wastewater overflow deserves immediate attention.
Leaking Water Heaters and Sudden Hot Water Problems
A water heater that stops producing hot water is inconvenient, but a tank that’s actively leaking or releasing water uncontrollably can require urgent attention. Depending on the problem, you may notice water collecting around the unit, dripping from a connection, unusual noises, or water escaping near a relief valve.
If your water heater is leaking heavily, avoid contact with standing water near electrical equipment. If you can safely reach the cold-water shut-off valve supplying the heater, closing it may reduce the water entering the unit. An electric water heater can be switched off at its breaker only if the electrical panel is safely accessible from a dry location. For a gas water heater, do not attempt to operate controls if you smell gas; leave the building and contact the gas utility or 911 from outside.
Some water heater failures involve replaceable components, while a leaking or badly deteriorated tank may require replacement. We’ll assess the problem and explain whether repair or replacement makes sense.

Sudden Loss of Water Throughout the House
If every faucet suddenly stops producing water, the problem may involve the property’s main supply line, a failed valve, a pressure issue, or an interruption in the public water system. Before assuming a pipe has broken, check whether your water utility has reported a service outage. You can also ask a nearby neighbor whether they’re experiencing the same problem.
If surrounding homes still have water, the issue may be specific to your property. A damaged private supply line, closed shut-off valve, or other plumbing failure may need investigation. Pineapple Plumbing can help assess problems involving the home’s private plumbing system.
A neighborhood-wide water outage, however, needs to be addressed by the serving utility rather than through unnecessary plumbing work inside your home.
Is Your Plumbing Problem an Emergency or Can It Wait Until Morning?
Not every plumbing problem needs an overnight service call. Knowing the difference can help you avoid unnecessary disruption while making sure serious problems receive attention.
A burst pipe, uncontrolled water leak, sewage entering the house, or active flooding should be treated as urgent. These situations may cause additional property damage or create safety concerns if the source isn’t controlled. A water heater leaking heavily, a toilet that cannot be stopped from overflowing, or water reaching electrical equipment also requires prompt action.
Other problems may be suitable for a regular appointment when they are contained and not creating a safety hazard. A slowly dripping faucet, an intermittently running toilet, reduced pressure at one fixture, or a single slow drain can often be assessed during normal service hours. Even then, a small leak shouldn’t be ignored indefinitely, particularly when moisture is reaching cabinets, walls, or flooring.
If you’re unsure how serious the situation is, call Pineapple Plumbing at (843) 739-7438 and describe the symptoms. We can discuss the immediate concerns and help you determine whether emergency service or a routine repair appointment is appropriate.
What Happens When You Call Pineapple Plumbing for Emergency Service?
When you’re dealing with an emergency, you shouldn’t have to guess what happens after making the call. Our goal is to understand the situation, explain the next steps, and make the repair process as straightforward as possible.
We Discuss the Problem and Its Urgency
When you call, tell us what happened, whether water or sewage is actively escaping, and whether you’ve been able to shut off the affected supply. We’ll also need your location and a description of the problem. These details help establish how urgent the situation is and what kind of assistance may be needed.
If you can safely take immediate precautions, such as closing a nearby shut-off valve, we’ll discuss those steps. We won’t recommend attempting work that could expose you to electricity, sewage, gas, or other hazards.
We Confirm Emergency Service Availability
Pineapple Plumbing accepts emergency plumbing calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. However, 24/7 emergency availability doesn’t mean that a technician is guaranteed to arrive immediately or within a specific number of minutes.
Response arrangements depend on the type of emergency, your location, technician availability, weather conditions, and other active calls. We’ll discuss the available service options and provide an estimated arrival window when one can be established.
If the situation requires urgent work to stop additional damage before a permanent repair can be completed, we’ll explain what can reasonably be done during the initial visit.
We Diagnose the Problem and Explain the Repair Options
Once the affected plumbing can be safely assessed, the next step is identifying the cause and determining the appropriate repair. Some emergencies involve accessible parts that can be repaired or replaced directly. Others require additional investigation, specialized components, or more extensive work.
We’ll explain what we find, discuss the proposed scope, and provide written pricing before approved repair work begins. If the problem requires additional work that cannot reasonably be completed during the initial visit, we’ll explain the available next steps instead of promising that every emergency can be permanently resolved in a single appointment.
Our priority is to address the immediate plumbing problem safely and help you understand the work your home needs.
How Much Does Emergency Plumbing Cost in Summerville, SC?
Emergency plumbing costs depend on what has failed, how easily the affected plumbing can be reached, the work required, and whether specialized parts or additional repairs are necessary. An accessible broken supply connection is a different job from an underground line failure or a sewage backup involving a damaged main sewer lateral.
The appointment itself may also involve diagnostic or emergency service charges depending on the type of call and applicable membership terms. That’s why it’s important to understand any callout charge, diagnostic fee, or after-hours fee before authorizing service. Once the problem has been assessed, the proposed repair should be explained and priced before work begins.
At Pineapple Plumbing, we provide written estimates for recommended work. If additional damage is discovered during the repair process, we’ll explain the findings and discuss any change to the proposed work before proceeding beyond the approved scope.
Emergency Service Benefits for Pineapple Partner Plan Members
The Pineapple Partner Plan includes priority scheduling, no additional after-hours or weekend fees under the membership terms, and 10% off qualifying plumbing repairs. The standard membership costs $11.99 per month, while veterans receive the full plan at no membership cost.
The repair discount does not apply to new installations, replacements, or repiping, and the plan’s published terms govern the benefits. Membership does not guarantee immediate technician arrival or eliminate the underlying cost of emergency repairs.
If you’re already a member, mention that when you call so the applicable benefits can be reviewed. For nonmembers, ask about the charges associated with your particular emergency appointment.

When Should You Contact Your Water or Sewer Utility in Summerville?
Some plumbing emergencies involve a home’s private plumbing system, while others originate from public water or wastewater infrastructure. Knowing which utility serves your property can help you avoid unnecessary work and contact the correct organization.
Summerville Commissioners of Public Works
Summerville Commissioners of Public Works provides water and wastewater service to properties within its service territory. Its published emergency water shut-off policy explains that homeowners are responsible for maintaining private shut-off valves and the service line between the water meter and the house.
If you’re unable to isolate a major water leak using your private shut-off valve, SCPW can assist with an emergency utility shutoff. However, its policy warns that utility personnel may not arrive immediately. SCPW also advises customers not to interfere with its locked meter boxes.
SCPW’s sewage blockage policy recommends contacting the utility when a sewer blockage occurs so it can investigate the public sewer main or accessible tap before responsibility for additional work is determined.

Berkeley County Water and Sanitation
Some homes with Summerville mailing addresses receive services from Berkeley County Water and Sanitation (BCWS). The utility provides emergency contact assistance for water and sewer problems, including after-hours and weekend calls.
If your property is served by BCWS and you’re experiencing a sewer backup, the utility can help determine whether the issue involves infrastructure it maintains. Problems limited to the home’s private plumbing may require a plumber instead.

Not every Summerville property has the same utility provider, so check the company listed on your water or sewer bill before assuming one set of procedures applies to your home.
Emergency Plumbing During Freezing Weather and Severe Storms
Summerville homeowners don’t experience the same winters as residents farther north, but occasional freezing temperatures can still damage exposed or poorly protected water pipes. Supply lines in unheated areas, exterior walls, garages, and other vulnerable locations may be at risk during unusually cold conditions.
South Carolina’s Emergency Management Division recommends protecting exposed pipes and taking suitable precautions before freezing weather arrives. If you suspect a pipe has frozen, don’t use an open flame or other unsafe heating method to thaw it. If the pipe has already burst or water begins escaping as it thaws, shut off the supply if safe and request plumbing assistance.
Heavy rain and storm conditions can also reveal drainage problems or affect public wastewater systems. If sewage begins backing up during a storm, stop using household plumbing and contact the appropriate wastewater utility where needed. Avoid entering floodwater, opening submerged equipment, or attempting repairs near electrical hazards.
Storm conditions can affect travel and technician availability, so emergency response windows may change during severe weather.
Why Summerville Homeowners Choose Pineapple Plumbing
Pineapple Plumbing was founded by Austin Holcomb and Austin Webb, two plumbing professionals who wanted homeowners to receive clear explanations and honest recommendations without unnecessary sales pressure. Austin Webb was born and raised in Summerville and brings more than 14 years of hands-on plumbing experience. We’re based at 503 N Commodore Way in Summerville and serve homeowners throughout the surrounding Lowcountry. We know that a plumbing emergency can be stressful, especially when you’re worried about damage to your home, the possibility of a costly repair, or how long your household will be without working plumbing.
Our approach is to explain the situation, identify the immediate problem, and recommend work based on the condition of your plumbing. If a targeted repair makes sense, we’ll discuss it. If the damage requires more extensive work, we’ll explain why. We provide written estimates before approved repairs and take care around your property, using protective coverings where appropriate and cleaning up our work area.
We also understand that communication matters during an emergency. You should know what has been found, what can reasonably be repaired, and whether further work may be required. We don’t believe homeowners should feel pressured into a major replacement simply because they’re dealing with an urgent problem.

So I posted a 5⭐️ review a month or so ago. I had all of my pipes re-done and some fixtures replaced by these wonderful people. Here we are a month later and somehow I have managed to loosen my kitchen sink. I txt them at noon, embarrassed I might add, to need help with something so frivolous. By 2 pm Austin showed up to my house to tighten it, all the while assuring me it was his pleasure and wouldn’t accept a dime from me, as it was a part of my warranty. I will forever suggest these guys to everyone I know and am so grateful they are who I chose when there are so many options out there🥰
