Common Garbage Disposal Problems We Fix

Jammed disposal that hums but won’t spin:
This is the most common call we get. Something is lodged between the grinding plate and the wall of the chamber, preventing the motor from turning. Running the unit while it’s jammed overheats the motor and can burn it out permanently. We clear the jam, check the motor for heat damage, and test the unit before we leave.

Disposal that won’t turn on:
If pressing the reset button on the bottom of the unit and checking the breaker doesn’t restore power, the issue is usually a failed motor, a damaged switch, or a wiring problem at the connection. We diagnose which one it is and tell you whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Leaking from the sink flange, the discharge pipe, or the body:
Where the leak is coming from determines whether it’s fixable. A leak at the sink flange usually means the mounting seal or plumber’s putty has failed and can be resealed. A leak at the drain connection or dishwasher port is typically a loose fitting that can be tightened. A leak from the body of the unit itself means the housing has cracked or corroded, and the disposal needs replacing.

Slow draining kitchen sink:
When the sink drains slowly while the disposal is running, the blockage is usually in the discharge pipe or the drain line below the disposal, not in the disposal itself. We clear the line and check whether the disposal is contributing to the problem or if the drain needs professional cleaning.

Persistent odor:
Food residue trapped in the grinding chamber, the splash guard, or the drain line below the unit produces odors that surface cleaning doesn’t always reach. Running ice cubes and cold water through the unit can help. If the smell persists, the buildup is deeper in the drain system and needs professional attention.

Dishwasher drainage problems connected to the disposal:
The dishwasher drain line connects to the disposal on most Charleston-area kitchen setups. If the disposal drain port is clogged, the knockout plug wasn’t removed during installation (a surprisingly common mistake), or the disposal itself is backed up, the dishwasher can’t drain properly. We check the full connection and clear any blockages.

New Disposal Installation

Whether you’re replacing an existing unit or adding one to a kitchen that’s never had one, installation involves more than plugging in a new disposal.

Replacing an existing disposal. We remove the old unit, inspect the sink flange and mounting hardware, check the drain connection and dishwasher port, install the new disposal, test for leaks, and confirm it operates correctly. If the old mounting system is compatible with the new unit, we reuse it. If not, we install new mounting hardware as part of the job.

Adding a disposal where one hasn’t existed. This requires modifying the sink drain configuration to accept the disposal, installing the sink flange and mounting assembly, connecting the drain discharge, and connecting the dishwasher drain line if applicable. We handle the plumbing side of the installation. If electrical work is needed (running a new switch or outlet), we’ll let you know upfront.

During a kitchen remodel. If you’re upgrading your sink, countertop, or kitchen layout, we coordinate with your contractor to install the disposal as part of the project so the plumbing is ready when the countertop goes in.

What Not to Put Down Your Disposal

A garbage disposal handles small amounts of soft food waste. It’s not designed to replace a trash can. Treating it like one is the fastest path to a jam, a clog, or a burned-out motor.

Grease and cooking oil. They flow in liquid but solidify in the drain line and coat the interior of the pipe. This is the single most common cause of kitchen drain clogs we see across the Lowcountry. Pour grease into a container and throw it in the trash.

Fibrous or starchy foods. Celery, asparagus, corn husks, artichokes, and potato peels wrap around the grinding components and can cause jams. Pasta and rice expand with water and contribute to drain blockages.

Hard items. Bones, fruit pits, shellfish shells, and ice in large quantities stress the grinding plate and motor. Small chicken bones may pass through, but larger bones and hard materials shouldn’t go in.

Non-food items. It sounds obvious, but we’ve pulled bottle caps, rubber bands, twist ties, broken glass, and silverware out of disposals. If it’s not food, don’t put it in.

Always run cold water. Run cold water before, during, and for 10 to 15 seconds after using the disposal. Cold water solidifies any grease so the disposal can break it up rather than letting it coat the drain line downstream.

Safe Checks You Can Do Before Calling

A few things are safe to try on your own before scheduling service:

Press the reset button. It’s a small red or black button on the bottom of the disposal unit. If the motor overloaded, pressing this may restore power. If it trips again immediately, stop using the unit and call.

Check the breaker. The disposal runs on its own circuit in most homes. If the breaker has tripped, reset it. If it trips again, the motor or wiring has an issue that needs professional attention.

Never put your hand inside the disposal. Even when the unit is off, the grinding components are sharp. If something is jammed, a plumber has the tools to clear it safely without risking injury.

Stop running a disposal that sounds wrong. Metallic scraping, loud grinding that’s different from normal operation, or a high-pitched whine all mean something is wrong. Continuing to run it can turn a repairable problem into a motor replacement.

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not spinning?

Something is jammed between the grinding plate and the housing wall, preventing the motor from turning. The motor is energized (which is why you hear the hum) but can't rotate. Turn the disposal off immediately. Running it while jammed overheats the motor and can cause permanent damage. A plumber can clear the jam and check whether the motor sustained heat damage.

How long does a garbage disposal typically last?

Most residential garbage disposals last 8 to 12 years with normal use and proper maintenance.
